Nature & WildlifeAdventure & Outdoors

High up in Sri Lanka's central highlands lies Horton Plains National Park, a protected plateau over 2,000m above sea level known for its otherworldly landscapes, sweeping views, and the dramatic cliff of World's End.

World's End Viewpoint

The star attraction is World's End – a viewpoint at the sudden end of the plateau where the land drops off a sheer cliff of about 870m (2,854 ft). Standing there, you feel on the edge of the world with an endless panorama. On clear mornings, you can see all the way to the southern coast – the Indian Ocean visible over 80 km away. After 9 AM, clouds often roll in rapidly, so arrive early (by 7–8 AM) for the best views.

Highland Trek and Wildlife

Visiting involves a lovely 9–10 km loop trek (around 3 hours) covering World's End, Little World's End, and Baker's Falls waterfall. The hike is mostly flat through rolling montane grasslands and misty cloud forests. The high altitude air is fresh and cool. Herds of sambar deer are commonly seen grazing. You might spot endemic birds like the Sri Lanka white-eye, and very rarely, a leopard.

Visiting Information

Accessible from Nuwara Eliya (1-hour drive) or Ohiya. Can get chilly – temperatures may drop to single digits Celsius at dawn. Dress in layers, bring sunscreen, hat, and plenty of water. The trail is self-guided and straightforward. This is one of few places in Sri Lanka for independent hiking without dangerous wildlife. Part of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Central Highlands. Cloud forest sections feature moss-covered trees and mysterious atmosphere.
