Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the first capital of Sri Lanka and remains one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world.

Ancient Capital of Sri Lanka

Founded in the 4th century BCE, Anuradhapura served as the capital of Sri Lanka for over 1,400 years. The city is home to some of the most well-preserved ruins of ancient Sri Lankan civilization, including massive dagobas (stupas), ancient pools, and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, believed to be the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world.

Sacred Buddhist Sites

The city houses eight sacred places of pilgrimage, including the Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, and Jetavanaramaya dagobas. The Sri Maha Bodhi tree, grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment, continues to be venerated by Buddhists from around the world. The ancient irrigation systems, including the massive Tissawewa and Basawakkulama tanks, showcase the advanced engineering knowledge of ancient Sri Lankans.

Exploring the Sacred City

Due to the vast area covered by the ancient city, it's recommended to hire a bicycle or tuk-tuk to explore the sites. Modest dress is required when visiting sacred places. Early morning visits offer cooler temperatures and beautiful lighting for photography. A full day is recommended to explore the major sites, though serious history enthusiasts may want to spend two days to fully appreciate this remarkable ancient city.
