Adams Peak, also known as Sri Pada, is a 2,243-meter tall mountain in Sri Lanka that is a sacred pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Muslims alike.

Sacred Summit

At the summit of Adams Peak lies a rock formation resembling a footprint, which is believed by Buddhists to be the footprint of Buddha, by Hindus to be that of Shiva, by Christians and Muslims to be that of Adam. This unique religious significance makes Sri Pada one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world, where people of different faiths gather in harmony.

The Pilgrimage Climb

The traditional pilgrimage season runs from December to May, when the weather is most favorable. The climb typically begins in the early hours of the morning (around 2-3 AM) to reach the summit in time for sunrise. The ascent involves climbing approximately 5,500 steps and takes 3-5 hours depending on fitness level. The trail is well-lit during the pilgrimage season and lined with tea stalls and rest stops. The sunrise view from the summit is absolutely spectacular, with a triangular shadow of the peak projected onto the clouds below.

Planning Your Climb

Prepare for cold temperatures at the summit, especially before sunrise. Bring warm clothing, water, snacks, and a flashlight. Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential. The climb is challenging but achievable for most people with reasonable fitness. During peak season (January-March), the mountain can be very crowded, especially on weekends and full moon days. Consider visiting on weekdays for a more peaceful experience.
